Fishing on Tenerife: An Atlantic Adventure
When people think of Tenerife, hiking, beach days or maybe the island’s many golf courses come to mind. What fewer visitors know: the waters surrounding this Canary Island are a fantastic destination for anglers.
Tenerife’s location in the middle of the Atlantic, its dramatic coastline and mild year-round climate create ideal conditions for a unique fishing experience. The Canary Current – a cool, nutrient-rich ocean stream – attracts a great diversity of fish species. Just a few minutes after leaving the harbour, boats reach deep, fish-rich waters.
Fishing trips are available all year round, but the peak season for big species like marlin and tuna runs from May to September or October. The local skippers know the main migration routes and can tell you exactly which fish are most likely to bite at what time of year.
Big Game Fishing on Tenerife: Impressive Variety
Depending on the season, you might catch different types of sea bream, parrotfish (Vieja), amberjack, various perch species like bigeye, grouper and sea bass – and especially different kinds of tuna, marlin, wahoo and barracuda. The most common techniques for deep-sea fishing on Tenerife include trolling, bottom fishing and jigging. Since we prefer to recommend activities we’ve tried ourselves, we joined one of our guests for a deep-sea fishing trip – a fantastic day out from Los Gigantes, with the dramatic 600-metre cliffs in the background and views all the way to La Gomera. With a bit of luck, you might even spot local whales!
Many harbours offer half-day and full-day guided fishing trips, including all equipment – either as a shared charter with other fishing fans or as a private charter. Besides the bigger fishing companies, there are also excellent one-man skippers. These often don’t have websites and are booked by word of mouth. Feel free to ask us for recommendations!

Can you fish from the shore on Tenerife? Yes, in many coastal towns you’ll see locals fishing from the shore – at harbours, on breakwaters or in sheltered bays. However, please make sure to follow local regulations, such as keeping a safe distance from swimming areas and other anglers, respecting protected species and adhering to minimum size requirements.
Tenerife: A paradise for anglers – and so much more
Tenerife offers a wide range of outdoor activities for active holidaymakers who love being in nature. The island brings together sea, mountains and beaches, charming villages and vibrant towns – all within easy reach. Some of our favourite excursions: the circular trail around the Chinyero volcano, the picturesque mountain village of Masca, the north-western tip Punta de Teno or the wild coastal landscape of Rambla de Castro. Don’t miss Playa Las Teresitas in the east, the many beautiful beaches in the south, the island capital Santa Cruz, the laurel forests of Anaga and the Teide National Park.
And if you not only enjoy fishing but also love seafood, Tenerife is just the place – from rustic guachinches to fine dining and Michelin-starred cuisine.
There are a thousand good reasons to visit Tenerife!
Tenerife – where fishing is part of the culture
Fishing has deep roots in Tenerife’s history and traditions – even if it no longer plays the economic role it once did. For example, locals from Santa Cruz are still affectionately called Chicharreros, a nickname that comes from the chicharro (horse mackerel), once abundant off the island’s coast.
Even the island’s original inhabitants, the Guanches, loved fish – though they didn’t go out to sea in boats or use nets or fishing rods. Instead, they stunned fish in shallow waters using the milk of the local spurge plant and simply gathered them by hand.
If you’d like to combine deep-sea fishing with a stylish stay, Villa ARTE in Garachico is just the place for you. From here, it’s about an hour’s drive to the marina of Los Gigantes – and you’ll enjoy the comfort of a fully equipped kitchen, perfect for preparing your fresh catch.
