Golfing in Tenerife – the Golfer’s Paradise of the Canaries

Tenerife is no longer an insider tip among golf lovers: the largest of the Canary Islands offers not only a mild climate all year round, but also spectacular fairways in unique settings – often lined with palm trees, overlooking the ocean and accompanied by a fresh Atlantic breeze.

With average temperatures around 20°C, you can enjoy a round of golf in shorts and a T-shirt even in winter. There’s no off-season here – Tenerife lets you play 12 months a year. And with just a 4–5 hour flight from central Europe, you’ll find an impressive variety of excellent courses packed into a small, easily navigable island.

Anyone playing golf in Tenerife will discover not only varied landscapes, but also the signature styles of renowned course designers. Pepe Gancedo, Dave Thomas and Severiano Ballesteros have each left their mark here – translated into fairways and greens full of character. Every course feels different: some wild and dramatic, others elegant and flowing. It’s well worth trying more than just one!

Not a Golf Resort. And That’s the Point.

Golfers know the classic resort experience – luxurious, right by the first tee or with a shuttle to the course. But many are looking for something else on their golf holiday: exclusivity without the buzz of a big hotel. More freedom, less routine. Villa ARTE in Garachico offers exactly that: five individually designed apartments in a historic townhouse, complete with a rooftop terrace, Atlantic views and local restaurants just around the corner. It’s the perfect place for travellers who value independence, good design and authentic surroundings – and who’d rather stroll through a charming Canarian town in the evening than queue at a resort buffet. Bonus: every course featured here is within 70 km.

Our guests agree: A golf holiday in Tenerife is always worth it. And the best part? One of the island’s most stunning courses is just a short drive from Villa ARTE – in beautiful Buenavista del Norte.

BUENAVISTA GOLF - Right on the Cliffs

Located on the coast near Buenavista del Norte, this is without doubt one of the island’s most beautiful courses. The 18-hole layout was designed by golf legend Seve Ballesteros and unfolds dramatically along rugged cliffs with sweeping views over the Atlantic. Several holes run directly along the edge – precision is key, but the views are spectacular. Tip: For a perfect sunset after your round, head to the nearby El Burgado restaurant – a local favourite.

REAL CLUB DE GOLF DE TENERIFE – The Royal One

18 holes | Par 71

Northeast | 45 km

The Royal Golf Club of Tenerife is home to the second-oldest golf course in Spain – set amidst fields, fruit trees and a forest that has stood for over a century. This is a challenging course, both in terms of technique and terrain: the natural elevation changes make for a dynamic and rewarding round.

ABAMA GOLF RESORT – The Luxury Oasis

18 holes | Par 72

Southwest | 48 km

Designed by Dave Thomas, this 18-hole course is part of a five-star resort and ranks among the most luxurious golf destinations on the island. Set high above the sea, the course features streams, lakes, tropical plants and thousands of palm trees. It’s as technically challenging as it is visually impressive – a course that impresses on every level.

AMARILLA GOLF – By the Marina

18 holes | Par 71

South | 71 km

Located right next to Golf del Sur, this course was designed by landscape architect Donald Steel and offers sweeping views of Mount Teide, the Atlantic Ocean and the yacht-filled Marina San Miguel. The standout is hole 5 – where the sea itself becomes part of the fairway. A beautiful and bold challenge, especially on windy days.

GOLF COSTA ADEJE – From Banana Plantation to Championship Course

18 holes + 9 holes | Par 72 & 33

Southwest | 51 km

This course was designed by Pepe Gancedo, six-time Spanish champion and renowned golf architect. He transformed former banana plantations into an elegant layout with wide fairways, volcanic stone walls and stunning sea views. Costa Adeje has already hosted several international tournaments and remains one of the most iconic courses on the island.

GOLF DEL SUR - The Tournament Course

27 holes (3 × 9) | Par 35 & 36

South | 69 km

Located in Tenerife’s south, Golf del Sur is one of the island’s most established courses. Opened in 1987, the layout includes three varied 9-hole loops – originally designed by José “Pepe” Gancedo and later redesigned by former professional Manuel Piñero.

Its wide fairways and well-maintained greens contrast strikingly with black volcanic sand bunkers, dotted with palm trees, small lakes and panoramic ocean views.

The course has a strong tournament history: it hosted several PGA events in the 1990s and was the scene of two world records in Long Drive competitions.

Despite its size, Golf del Sur is not a course to rush through. Elevated greens and changing winds demand precision – a scenic, sporty challenge for experienced golfers.

GOLF LAS AMÉRICAS – The Gentle Green

18 holes | Par 72

South | 56 km

Set in the heart of lively Playa de las Américas, close to Los Cristianos, this course offers a calm oasis amid the buzz of the south. Designed under the direction of a renowned professional golfer, the terrain unfolds in an amphitheatre-like layout with gently sloping fairways. Natural hills surround and shelter the course – making it pleasantly protected from the wind.

Garachico auf der Isla Baja

Tenerife: So Much More Than Golf

Tenerife impresses not only with its wide range of golf courses, but also with an abundance of natural and cultural attractions. Around Garachico, the contrasts are striking – sea and mountains, laurel forests and lava fields, all within a short distance.

Recommended excursions? Plenty. Walk the circular trail around the Chinyero volcano, hike the adventurous path from Santiago del Teide to Masca, visit the northwest tip Punta de Teno with views of Los Gigantes, or explore the rugged coastal route of Rambla de Castro.

Charming towns such as La Orotava, Icod de los Vinos – home to the ancient Drago Milenario tree – and the harbour town of Puerto de la Cruz are perfect for a relaxed stroll.

Want to explore further? In just about an hour you can reach the golden Playa de Las Teresitas, the island capital Santa Cruz, the mystical Anaga laurel forests or the spectacular Teide National Park.

And dining? Whether it’s casual eats at the clubhouse or fine dining with a view – Tenerife offers everything from local favourites to Michelin-starred cuisine.

There are a thousand reasons to visit Tenerife!

Tenerife – An Island with a Long Golfing History

British influence played a key role in Tenerife’s economic development. The elegant colonial-style mansions in the towns along the north coast still bear witness to the wealth of British merchants.

In the early 19th century, a wave of elite tourism began: more and more wealthy Britons came to the island for extended stays, seeking relief in its mild climate. Exclusive hotels were built – and with them, the island’s very first golf courses to entertain their guests.

In 1932, the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife was founded – today one of the oldest golf clubs in Spain. It was later granted the royal title “Real” by King Juan Carlos I himself.

Even golf legend Severiano Ballesteros made his mark on Tenerife: in 1976, he won the Tenerife Open, one of the early highlights of his career.

To this day, you can still feel the island’s golfing heritage – and a touch of British clubhouse flair – on many of its greens.

We look forward to welcoming you to the golfer’s paradise of Tenerife!
