The Romería Garachico

Celebrate Like the Canarios: If you want to experience the real Tenerife, there’s hardly a better opportunity than the Romería Garachico—more specifically, the Romería de San Roque. Every year on August 16th, our charming town on the island’s northwest coast transforms into a sea of color, music, and pure joy. A spectacle you shouldn’t miss—and one you can experience up close from our perfectly located apartments in the heart of the old town.

Romería Garachico – A Festival with History

The Romería de San Roque has a long tradition dating back to the 17th century. At that time, Garachico was devastated by a severe plague epidemic. The townspeople prayed to San Roque, the patron saint of plague victims, for help—and when the disease was finally overcome, they vowed to hold a procession in his honor every year. What began as a religious pledge has evolved over the centuries into one of the most joyful folk festivals in Tenerife.

A Day Full of Joy and Celebration

From early in the morning, the streets fill with people dressed in traditional Canarian attire. Men wear white shirts, dark trousers, and wide belts, while women shine in colorful skirts, striped aprons, and intricately embroidered blouses. The ox carts, beautifully decorated with flowers and fruits, accompanying the pilgrims are another highlight of the celebration.

The procession starts at Iglesia de Santa Ana, where the statue of San Roque is carried to the chapel of the same name on the outskirts of town. Along the way, folklore groups play the timple, a traditional Canarian instrument, filling the air with music and song. The Canarios are known for their hospitality and warmly invite visitors to dance, sing along, and of course, enjoy a drink or two!

Culinary Delights

A true Canarian festival wouldn’t be complete without great food! Along the Romería Garachico route, you’ll find countless opportunities to indulge in local specialties. From papas arrugadas con mojo (salted potatoes with a spicy sauce) and queso asado (grilled cheese) to grilled meats and fresh fish—there’s something for everyone. And of course, no celebration would be complete without the famous Canarian wine, which is often generously shared with festival-goers from the decorated carts.

Why You Should Experience Romería Garachico

The Romería de San Roque isn’t a staged tourist show—it’s a living tradition, a tribute to the history and culture of the island. Here, you’ll experience Tenerife at its most authentic, far from the crowded beaches and hotel resorts of the south. Those who embrace the spirit of the festival will quickly feel the infectious joy of the Canarios—a celebration you’ll never forget!

What Is a Romería?

The term Romería comes from the Spanish word romero (pilgrim) and originally referred to religious pilgrimages. However, on Tenerife, Romerías are much more than that—they are a unique mix of tradition, folklore, and joyful celebration. Almost every village on the island has its own Romería, usually in honor of its patron saint. Besides the Romería de San Roque, some of the most famous include the Romería de San Benito Abad in La Laguna and the Romería de San Marcos in Tegueste. The common thread across all Romerías? Beautifully decorated ox carts, traditional music, and an abundance of good cheer!

Visit the San Roque Chapel early in the morning, before the procession begins, and soak in the festive atmosphere in peaceful surroundings before the hustle and bustle starts!
